Choosing the correct replacement requires matching several key specifications to your existing motor. This guide explains what to measure and check before ordering.

What Is a Recliner Actuator?

An actuator is a linear motor that extends and retracts to move the recliner backrest, footrest or lift platform. It converts electrical energy from the power supply into mechanical movement. Most electric recliners use one or two actuators depending on whether the backrest and footrest move independently.

Key Specifications to Check Before Ordering

Stroke Length

Stroke length is the distance the actuator extends from its fully retracted position to its fully extended position. This is the most critical measurement. An actuator with the wrong stroke length will either not reach the full range of movement or will over-extend and damage the chair mechanism.

Measure the stroke length of your existing actuator by extending it fully and measuring from the inner tube to the outer tube junction, or check the label on the motor body for the stroke specification.

Overall Length

Force Rating

  • The chair moves slowly or stops partway through the cycle.
  • The motor body is visibly damaged, corroded or has a burnt smell.
