Why Is My Electric Recliner Moving Slowly or Stopping Mid-Cycle?

An electric recliner that moves slowly, hesitates or stops before completing its full range of movement is usually experiencing a power, actuator or overload issue. This guide explains the most common causes and how to check each one. Step 1: Check the Power Supply

An undersized or failing power supply is one of the most common causes of slow or interrupted recliner movement.

  • Confirm the power supply is rated correctly for your chair. A 2AMP supply may be insufficient for a dual-motor recliner or a chair with LED lighting and USB accessories drawing additional current.
  • Check the power supply cable for damage, kinks or partial cuts that could restrict current flow.
  • A power supply that becomes very hot during operation may be working beyond its rated capacity and should be replaced with a higher-amperage unit.
  • Try a known working power supply if one is available to confirm or rule out the supply as the cause.

Step 2: Check for Overloading

Operating a recliner beyond its rated weight capacity causes the motor to work harder, which can result in slow movement, overheating and automatic shutdown.

  • Check the weight rating on the chair label or documentation.
  • Ensure the chair is not being used to support weight beyond its rated capacity.
  • Allow the chair to rest for several minutes if it has been operated continuously — some motors have a thermal protection circuit that shuts down the motor when it overheats and resets after cooling.

Step 3: Check for Mechanical Obstructions

  • Disconnect the power supply and check under and around the chair for objects caught in the mechanism.
  • Check that the chair is not pressed against a wall or piece of furniture that restricts movement.
  • Inspect the mechanical linkages for bent brackets, misaligned components or debris.

Step 4: Check the Actuator

  • Listen for grinding, clicking or straining sounds during movement — these indicate internal wear.
  • A chair that moves normally when lightly loaded but slows under normal use may have an actuator with increased internal friction.

Step 5: Check the Control Box and Cables

  • Check all cable connections at the control box, motor and handset socket.
  • Look for cables that have been pinched or partially cut by the chair mechanism.
