How to Replace an Electric Recliner Handset
Replacing an electric recliner handset is usually a straightforward plug-in repair. The important part is choosing a compatible handset before fitting it. Button layout, connector type, pin arrangement, cable length and control-system compatibility all matter. If the chair has another fault as well, start with our electric recliner troubleshooting guide first.
Before You Start: Confirm the Handset Is the Fault
A chair that does not respond may have a power supply, cable, control-box or actuator fault rather than a handset fault. Check the wall outlet, power-supply indicator and visible cable connections first.
- Check that the power supply is connected and the wall outlet is switched on.
- Inspect the handset cable for cuts, kinks or damage where it enters the handset.
- Check whether one button is stuck, loose or feels different from the others.
- With the power disconnected, inspect the handset connector for bent, corroded or pushed-back pins.
- If a compatible spare handset is available, test it before ordering a replacement.
How to Choose a Compatible Replacement Handset
Do not choose a handset by appearance alone. Compare the following details with your existing handset and control box. Our connector and plug identification guide can help with the plug and pin check.
- Brand and model: Record any Okin, Kaidi, Limoss, Dewert or other brand and the complete model number.
- Button layout: Count the buttons and note whether the handset controls the backrest, footrest, lift function, headrest, USB or lighting.
- Connector: Confirm the plug shape, pin count, pin arrangement and locking tab.
- Cable: Check the cable length and where the cable enters the handset.
- Control box: A replacement handset must be compatible with the control box fitted to the chair.
What You Will Need
- Compatible replacement recliner handset
- Phone or camera to photograph the existing connections
- No tools for most plug-in handset replacements
Step-by-Step: How to Replace the Handset
- Move the chair to a safe position. If possible, return the backrest and footrest to a stable position before starting.
- Disconnect the power supply from the wall outlet. Wait a few seconds before handling the connectors.
- Photograph the existing connection so you can compare the cable routing and connector position.
- Disconnect the old handset by gripping the connector body and pulling it straight out. Do not pull the cable.
- Compare the old and new handsets for brand, model, button layout, connector, pin arrangement and cable length.
- Connect the replacement handset by pushing the connector fully into the matching socket. Do not force it — keyed connectors should align in one orientation.
- Route the cable safely away from hinges, linkages and pinch points.
- Reconnect the power supply to the wall outlet.
- Test every button and confirm the chair moves in the correct direction. Test slowly and keep clear of the moving mechanism.
After Replacement: What to Check
- Every button operates the intended chair function.
- The chair stops when the button is released.
- The cable does not catch, stretch or become pinched during movement.
- The connector remains firmly seated.
- The chair does not move without a button being pressed.
Common Handset Replacement Mistakes
- Matching by appearance: Similar-looking handsets can use different wiring or control systems.
- Matching by pin count only: A 5-pin connector is not automatically compatible with every 5-pin system.
- Pulling the cable: Disconnect by gripping the connector body to avoid damaging the cable.
- Routing through the mechanism: A cable caught in a hinge or linkage can be damaged when the chair moves.
- Testing with power connected: Disconnect mains power before changing any connector.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I replace a recliner handset myself?
Most plug-in handset replacements can be completed at home without tools. Disconnect mains power first and confirm the replacement matches the existing control system, connector and button layout.
Are all 5-pin recliner handsets interchangeable?
No. Pin count alone does not confirm compatibility. The pin arrangement, wiring, connector housing, button layout and control box must match.
Why does my replacement handset fit but not work?
A handset can physically fit while using different wiring or signals. Check the brand, model, pin arrangement and control-box compatibility. Contact CouchGuard with photographs if you are unsure.
What if the chair still does not work after changing the handset?
Check the power supply, cable connections, control box and actuator. A handset may not be the cause if the chair remains completely unresponsive.
