CouchGuard Leather Prep Wash — Surface Preparation for Leather Repair
Leather Prep Wash is an essential pre-repair step that removes the manufacturer's topcoat finish from leather, allowing new colour and repair products to bond correctly. Preparation is the key to good adhesion — without it, leather colour and repair products will not adhere properly.
Important: Do NOT use Leather Prep Wash as a general cleaner. The leather MUST be recoloured after Leather Prep has been applied, as it removes the protective topcoat.
How to Use
- If leather is dirty, clean first with CouchGuard Leather Cleaner
- Apply Leather Prep Wash to remove the manufacturer's topcoat
- Apply Leather Colour after prep — generally use 250ml of Leather Prep to 1 litre of Leather Colour
- Follow full directions on the Leather Repair Kit page
Frequently Asked Questions
What does leather prep wash do?
It strips the manufacturer's factory topcoat from the leather surface, creating a clean base for new leather colour or repair products to bond to. Without this step, new colour will peel or flake off.
Do I need to use leather prep before recolouring?
Yes — leather prep is an essential step before applying any leather colour or dye. Skipping it will result in poor adhesion and the colour peeling off.
Can I use leather prep wash as a regular cleaner?
No — Leather Prep Wash is not a general cleaner. It removes the protective topcoat, so the leather must be recoloured after use. For general cleaning use CouchGuard Leather Cleaner.
How much leather prep do I need?
Generally use 250ml of Leather Prep to 1 litre of Leather Colour for a standard lounge suite repair.
